The first citywide convention of 2010 will also be the second-largest conference to convene in New Orleans since Hurricane Katrina. The American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons is expecting about 31,000 attendees at its 2010 Annual Meeting, which begins Tuesday and ends March 13.
The meeting will be second only to last years gathering of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America, which brought 36,700 attendees to the city.
"This is certainly a very large citywide that we're very happy to have," said Mavis Early, executive director of the Greater New Orleans Hotel and Lodging Association. "With the economic downturn last year and the year before attendance had gone down at most association meetings and convention business was off. Now we're finding that attendance is trending back up again."
