Thousands of New Orleans schoolchildren can apply for private school tuition vouchers this week.
The vouchers, which cover the cost of tuition, will be awarded for 2010-2011 school year to children starting kindergarten, as well as to students starting first through fifth grades who currently attend one of 21 low-performing public schools in the city.
Families must live in New Orleans and have a total income that does not surpass 250 percent of current federal poverty guidelines, or $55,125 for a family of four. This will be the program's third year.
