New Orleans has always been known for its community building, food and music! So it was only right that Voodoo Music Festival be held in New Orleans again! Each day of the festival it drew in huge crowds of people coming to enjoy local and national musical acts alike. All ages and races coming together over the music they love in beautiful City Park.
At Voodoo Music Festival there is something for whatever your taste may be. I saw rock to hip hop, to jazz to burlesque and even more. In addition to all the fascinating music were all the extra events to help maximize the Voodoo Experience. Playstation games to keep you entertained before sets, phone charging stations, and even hula hoops to entertain yourself under the beautiful trees.
The Music
In New Orleans, our lives are so enriched with the fabulous music of our local musicians it was only proper that we share our music culture with the rest of the world at Voodoo Music Festival. So many great New Orleans acts graced different stages throughout Voodoo Festival. We got a chance to catch a few of our favorite locals.
Big Sam’s Funky Nation
It’s always a pleasure to catch one of Big Sam’s Funky Nation shows! When Big Sam’s on the scene you know dancing and smiling will fill the audience. Sam and his band have the skills to put on a great show and get the audience to move. Big Sam is a fascinating trombone player, formerly of the Dirty Dozen Brass Band. If you have never checked out this band, you definitely need to NOW. You may have also caught him on an episode of Treme.

Mia Borders
It was truly a pleasure to see Uptown born; Mia Borders perform on the main stage at Voodoo. She gave a dynamic yet intimate show to the diverse group she drew in. This New Orleans based vocalist provides a great blend with her music, so soulful yet funky. I loved her since the day I heard “Magnolia Blue”.
Kermit Ruffins
I definitely couldn’t miss my beloved Kermit Ruffins. This is one man that knows how to put on a show. With his vocals and trumpet, he can make all your worries go away! He is yet another New Orleans artist that I can guarantee would put a smile on your face with their charm! Check out his new album Happy Talk.
Theresa Anderson
How can anyone not love Theresa Anderson. When she comes on staging smiling, takes off her shoes and give you a show you will never forget. Theresa Anderson is a phenomenal artist raised in Sweden but based right out of New Orleans. She recently performed a one woman show, check it out http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GJkQvyoWJBk.
Rebirth Brass Band
Another New Orleans favorite, Rebirth Brass Band made us all feel like second lining til we dropped. It wouldn’t be New Orleans without showcasing a brass band! Rebirth was formed in 1983 and still kicking strong! This is one brass band with a strong funk influence.
Local Skank
Thanks to Voodoo Festival, I got introduced to a new group straight out of New Orleans called, The Local Skank. The group is five totally fascinating female musicians. They started back in 2008 and have definitely proved they know how to put on a show full of energy and laughs. In their music, you can find influence from a little of everything, from bluegrass, punk to ska. You definitely need to find and check them out.
Fleur De Tease
I finally had my chance to see the beautiful girls of Fleur De Tease put on a show. The beautiful girls provided a phenomenal show in City Park that will remembered by many. They brought out the costumes and had a great time with it. We had a chance to see Trixie Minx, Chris Lane, Bella Blue, and others in action.
We also had a chance to enjoy some great national artist that came down to enjoy the beautiful New Orleans weather and share their music. Some artist we caught were, Jonsi, Metric, Ozzy Osbourne, My Morning Jacket, Florence and the Machine, Rival Sons, Interpol, MGMT, Drake and others. Two crowd favorites we got a chance to witness were Weezer and Janelle Monae. The crowd for Weezer was massive. So many people enjoying the music along the running track at City Park, singing along to the dynamic stage presence of Weezer. For miles, all you could see was blankets, costumes and the people. The site alone was memorable.
The Janelle Monae crowd had a great time! This performance brought lots of singing along, screaming and dancing. It was like a nonstop dance party with visitors and locals alike enjoying.
We had a great time and our winners Champ Superstar and Agramci had a wonderful time at this year’s Voodoo Festival. Thanks Again to State Farm and Club 17K for providing us tickets to hook up some of our loyal readers! Also, special thanks to our guest photographer, Deshandalyn Meridy, senior at Warren Easton High School.
