My name is Rebekah Cain and I’m the Manager, Marketing and Communications for the American Red Cross Southeast Louisiana Chapter.  I have lived in New Orleans since 12/24/08 and have been with the Red Cross since June 2009.  I am starting to feel more and more comfortable in New Orleans and really enjoy meeting new people and hearing about all the amazing community benefit organizations in this city!

The Southeast Louisiana Chapter of Red Cross  

The mission of the American Red Cross (a volunteer-led organization) is to provide relief to victims of disasters and help people prevent, prepare for, and respond to emergencies.  Most people think of the Red Cross in the response function – but we actually do a lot of work in preparing for disasters and helping to create a culture of preparedness in our community. 

Get Involved

One great way to get involved is by volunteering with our Community Outreach department and learning how to give Community Disaster Education presentations.  These presentations can be given in faith-based organizations, community centers, schools – anywhere in a community.  They contain information on how to ensure your family, friends and neighborhood is properly prepared – for anything!  In addition to hurricane preparedness, we also want people to practice Fire Safety (the #1 disaster affecting people in Southeast Louisiana is home fires!), know what to do in case of flooding, and how to take care of yourself or someone else who has the flu.

Southeast Louisiana Chapter Announces “Heroes of the Storm” Gala Event

Chapter to honor LTG Russel L. Honoré, USA (Ret) and other Heroes of the Storm

NEW ORLEANS, LA, August 2, 2010 — In 2005, the levee failures following Hurricane Katrina devastated the City of New Orleans. Five years later, we are still rebuilding; however, the city would not be in a position to rebuild had it not been for the many Heroes of the Storm -- Coast Guard, National Guard, police, firemen, Red Cross volunteers, electrical linemen and others -- who helped in those early days after the storm.

On August 28, 2010 at 8:00pm, to mark the five-year anniversary, the American Red Cross Southeast Louisiana Chapter will present "Heroes of the Storm," a fund-raising gala that will honor all the First Responders and pay special tribute to LTG Russel L. Honoré, USA (Ret), who mobilized the response that ultimately saved the city.

To be held at The Roosevelt Hotel, this prestigious occasion, held in the Grand Ballroom, will feature Master of Ceremonies Norman H. Robinson, WDSU News Anchor and will include dinner and entertainment by Delfeayo Marsalis & the New Orleans Uptown Jazz Orchestra with Special Guests including; Ellis Marsalis, Kermit Ruffins and the Barbecue Swingers, Charmaine Neville, Jeremy Davenport, Leah Chase and more.  This will be a time to commemorate the anniversary, but more important, a time to celebrate and honor all those Heroes of the Storm who lifted us up -- both literally and figuratively -- in the post-Katrina chaos.

The "Heroes of the Storm" event will allow the American Red Cross, our Congressional delegation, city officials and the entire city to honor these heroes, and at the same time raise critical funds for the American Red Cross Southeast Louisiana Chapter, so that we can continue to provide help and hope to the 1.6 million residents of Southeast Louisiana.

Southeast Louisiana Chapter Disaster Teams Head to Shreveport

Red Cross Workers Respond to Flooding and Tornadoes in Northwest Louisiana

New Orleans, LA, November 2, 2009 – Local disaster volunteers are traveling north to Shreveport, LA to assist with the recovery efforts caused by flooding and tornadoes in Northwest Louisiana late last week.

“The call came today for additional disaster workers who are needed to support relief efforts in Shreveport,” said Kay Wilkins, CEO of the Southeast Louisiana Chapter. “In response, our chapter is sending three local volunteers to support casework operations.”

Today Cheryl Cadigan (a local volunteer from Slidell), Tess Spinola and Daniel Wendover, are departing for Shreveport.  Tess and Daniel are National Preparedness Response Corp (NPRC) members who began their 10-month commitment with the Southeast Louisiana Chapter on Monday, August 3, 2009.  All three will be involved with casework operations to assist residents affected by flooding and tornadoes once they arrive at the disaster response operations.

“This is what makes volunteering special with the Red Cross,” explains Kay Wilkins “We’re a large family.  When a member is in need, you pack up and help them through their difficulty. Red Cross volunteers in other areas have provided us with the same generosity of their time and skills many times before.”

Chapter volunteers are trained to provide a variety of disaster relief services for the people they help.  “It is extremely rewarding work and the volunteers always say they get so much more from the people they help than vice versa” continues, Kay Wilkins. “Just as the Red Cross asks local Louisiana residents to be prepared for emergencies, volunteers must be ready prior to a disaster. The Chapter offers training classes for volunteers to be knowledgeable about what is involved in disaster response from the large scale hurricane responses to our number one and daily response to residential fires.”
