Groups take steps to make New Orleans more bike-friendly

Ranked sixth in the nation for bike commuters, New Orleans is becoming one of the most active cycling cities in the country. And cyclists say more areas of the city need to be bicycle friendly.  

"It's very bike friendly as far as getting around. As far as safety, it's not safe yet. And I say yet because I have high hopes for it," said Shelley Bourgeois, a member of the Metro Bicycle Coalition.

Cyclists cite close calls with both cars and pedestrians.

But some of those situations, police say, stem from cyclists disobeying traffic laws.

Bike racks to be installed throughout New Orleans

Bicycles in New Orleans are locked up to stop signs, buildings and telephone poles, but rarely to bike racks.

The lack of secure bicycle parking was the motivation for Where Ya' Rack?, a new program that aims to increase the number of racks around the city through sponsorships and donations, and ultimately to encourage more biking in the community.

New Orleans ranked 8th in bicycle commuters

According to survey data from the U.S.Census Bureau, New Orleans ranks eighth among the 51 largest U.S. cities for the percentage of residents who walk or bike as their main mode of transportation.

The report, compiled by the Alliance for Biking and Walking, reported that 9 percent of trips made in the city are done either by foot or bike, about equal to the national average level. The top ranked city is New York and the lowest is Omaha.
