New Orleans Jazz Fest Photo Galler
This year's New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival, which wrapped up seven days of music yesterday (May 2), served up sounds that hit every sonic flavor related to the brassy genre born in the city. Aretha Frankin may have had to cancel her set, but that didn't slow the momentum of the fest's second weekend. Van Morrison anchored one major stage while the Dead Weather held down the other. The straight-ahead rock of Pearl Jam drew fans on Saturday.

own Better Than Ezratook to the stage over the weekend at the city's Jazz Fest. The performance included their hit tracks "A Lifetime" and "Desperately Wanting," in addition to several well-received covers.
The pop rockers made their allegiance to the city known, showing off their New OrleansSaints gear and giving props to fellow NoLa musicians Papa Grows Funk.

Legends sometimes come in small packages; as in they don’t have to be big rock n roll bands to leave their mark. They can be more quiet: two voices reaching out to a sea of muddy people, who didn’t mind that one voice was weak, and in fact helped out by singing loudly to form a remarkable crescendo.

Anita Baker headlines New Orleans jazz festival
When Anita Baker leaves the stage at the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival this weekend, she doesn't plan on taking anything with her.
Baker has headlined in the Crescent City before, but five years after Hurricane Katrina, she says "I think that we're more adamant about just leaving my whole body there. And just giving everything that I have. Because we want them to be entertained."
The 52-year-old singer with the husky, red velvet vocals has won eight Grammy Awards for hits including "Giving You the Best That I Got," "Rapture" and "I Apologize."
She'll step away from a music studio in Nashville where she's working on a new album, just in time for Sunday's show. It will be an opportunity "to play, talk and holler and scream and dance," she says.
Grandpa Elliott Small debuts at New Orleans Jazz Fest today
Grandpa Elliott Small's career on the streets of the French Quarter spans 60 years.
His usual spot is the corner of Toulouse and Royal streets, right where he started out.
"I used to tap here when I was a little kid," he said.
One day when his uncle left for work without his harmonica, he picked it up and put it to his mouth.
"Oooh, it was awful," he said, laughing. "He chewed tobacco. I had to sterilize that thing."

In New Orleans, jazz fans get their groove on despite rain
Nature gave the 2010 New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival torrents of rain and fields of mud on Friday's opening day, but that made it easier for the undaunted faithful to dig deeply into the roots of American popular music.
More than 60 acts representing the best of the region's and the nation's jazz, blues, country, Cajun, gospel, rock, brass band and zydeco traditions held their own against the natural thunder on a dozen stages as the 41st Fest began a seven day run.

The 41st New Orleans Jazz Fest comes into better focus with today's release of the day-by-day roster.
Headlining the opening Friday, April 23, are Lionel Richie, the Black Crowes and Dr. John. This year's first Saturday, April 24, features Simon & Garfunkel in the duo's only scheduled American concert of 2010. Pearl Jam anchors the second Saturday with its sole American festival appearance of the year.
