The Waking in New Orleans: Reveillon Dinners

One of my favorite holiday traditions in New Orleans is the Reveillon dinner. Traditionally, in France and other French-speaking countries, réveillon dinners occur on Christmas Eve and New Year’s Eve. Réveillon comes from the word réveil, which means “waking,” as these dinners typically required diners to stay awake until midnight or later.

In New Orleans, Reveillon dinners are held as part of French Quarter Festivals Inc.’s Christmas New Orleans Style, with more than thirty participating restaurants. Reveillon dinners are a great way to enjoy a multi-course meal (the menus are four courses or five courses) at a reasonable price. These menus include traditional Creole dishes and modern interpretations utilizing the best in local and seasonal ingredients. This is a great way for chefs to showcase their skills, while keeping to a holiday theme. Many of the restaurants have multiple choices for each course, making it easy to please a variety of diners. If you are a food lover, I dare you to read the menus and not be tempted! Gather a group of loved ones, choose the menu that looks best to you, and make a reservation. You can find the menus at http://www.neworleansonline.com/christmas/. Look under Cuisine, View Reveillon Menus. Be prepared to enjoy a great New Orleans meal!
