I Heart Southern Style Event

#LAisthenewLA: NOLA Fashion Week 2011

The city I love so dearly is full of talent! Creativity, entrepreneurial spirit and proactive individuals walk the street each day carrying their “who dat” pride in their heart. Every moment I become more in awe of the richness of the people of New Orleans, who take time to make a difference and strengthen the rebirth of our beloved city.  With the hard work of our citizens, industries have begun to build stronger presences.  They have created a culture of collaboration, with likeminded people in the city wanting to do more and show the world what they have to offer. 

One of the most recent industries that New Orleans has brought into the fold is the fashion industry. For many years we have had many talented individuals from throughout Louisiana embark on a journey through fashion.  From designers to stylists and fashion bloggers, they have helped show us how our art and culture have an effect on fashion.

To denote the passion our city and state has for fashion, the inaugural NOLA Fashion Week will make its introduction in March 2011.  These festivities will create opportunities for Southern based designers to showcase their talent and make the fashion industry take notice. The week will be filled with events and activities that highlight the artistic and fashion forward venues and individuals in New Orleans.  In a two day finale ten full length runway shows will blow minds across the world with their Fall/Winter Collections.

Her designs are known as wearable art and handcrafted from start to finish by Varela. Don't miss your opportunity to see some of the great fashion Louisiana has to offer.

Ruffian Swap: Everything Old is New Again

You know those jeans in the back of your closet that you can’t quite wear anymore, but have yet to part from? How about those boots you talked yourself into buying last year by swearing they went with every outfit you had, but you never really got a chance to wear? And what about those 45 adorable scarves you have folded neatly in your drawer from your grad school days up in the snowy north? No? Maybe that’s just me, then; but I’m sure you have similar clothing tales.

What can you do with all your extra clothes, shoes and accessories? Take a hint from Ruffian Swap: “Your clothes are nice; but you don’t like them anymore. Swap them for something new and be happy.” And that pretty much sums up the Ruffian Swap experience.

This past Saturday, August 28^th, the first Ruffian Swap presented Pour les Femmes at La Thai Uptown. Participants were encouraged to clean out their closets and bring any and all of their wardrobe over for swapping. The event, which cost participants $20, began with a clothing drop off between 4:30–6:30pm. During that time the clothes were sorted, folded, racked and displayed while participants enjoyed discounted dining, a cash bar, the musical styling of DJ Joc and the company of like-minded fashion- and budget-conscious women.

WORN AGAIN is back!!!

Team WORN AGAIN has hosted seven fabulous years of re-purposed couture supporting various grass-roots organizations; 2010’s fundraiser will be our fourth in New Orleans, establishing this recycled fashion extravaganza as one of our city’s premier “socially conscious social events”. We are pleased to announce that WORN AGAIN nola4 will benefit the community-based arts and literature collective Press Street. 

WORN AGAIN designers deconstruct the random recycled materials we give them to create innovative works of wearable art to rock the WORN AGAIN runway. The WORN AGAIN Patron Party precedes the fashion show and the After Party is kicked off by our infamous Recycled Dance Competition. WORN AGAIN nola4 is always a wonderful night of unique fashion, terrific prizes, limited edition merchandise and amazing music that true lovers of New Orleans creative culture will not want to miss.

New Orleans designer hopes show will foster the growth of a local fashion industry

The living room of John Delgadillo’s 7th Ward shotgun home is split in two by an exposed brick fireplace. One side is inhabited by a sofa and chairs; and the other, by a work table, sewing machine and an explosion of fabric swatches. Tiny, basic sketches — a sheath with a ruffle hem, a pencil skirt — are pinned to a white cabinet door.

“None of those got made,” Delgadillo said as he apologized for the dishabille of his work room. “I get tired of them before I even start.”

The countdown to New Orleans Fashion Week 2009 begins with model casting at the W Hotel

As music pulsed in the lounge at the W Hotel New Orleans on Saturday night,  a studio space upstairs was abuzz with model hopefuls and fashion designers. Model casting for the second annual New Orleans Fashion Week marked the end of a year-long planning process for the event, which will take place October 11-17.
