Ask Brad Pitt what he loves so much about New Orleans, and sooner or later the conversation will turn to shrimp po-boys.

Nearly 20 years after Emeril Lagasse begged, borrowed and scrounged every penny he could to open his own restaurant, the celebrity chef worried it was all slipping away.
Lagasse's 17-year run on the Food Network was over. Hurricane Katrina had caused at least a $1 million loss to his three New Orleans-based restaurants and cut his profits by a third.
But just when things were looking bleakest — Bam! — Martha Stewart kicked it up a notch and the 50-year-old Lagasse is back.
"She showed up at a tough time when I thought the whole ship might be going down," Lagasse said during a recent interview. "Basically, what I have now is a business partner."

The sounds of 26 children clapping their hands, stomping their feet and laughing as they recite numbers are barely audible outside the house, where a growing line of subdued adults waits patiently for the food bank to open. Tommye Lambert, owner and operator of Tommye's Tiny Tots Daycare Center, is the link between these opposite worlds.
It's a Friday morning, and a bustling hive of activity has taken over the Mid-City day-care center. Parents drop off their children, some bouncing into the room full of energy; others sleepy and tearful and in need of Lambert's soothing embrace before they too are intoxicated by the infectious laughter that fills the rooms.

Harry Ballard's constant companion on the road is a hard black briefcase -- something that would look more at home in the hands of a tuxedoed James Bond -- that rides in the back of his SUV.
Inside the box that smells like an old workshop are the tools of his trade: oil, miscellaneous parts and dirty decades-old screwdrivers, pliers and a springhook, used to disconnect and reattach tiny springs.
"It's dirty (work), " Ballard said. "Your hands stay dirty all day. But that's OK."

Obama, cabinet officials to New Orleans next week

Recovery
President Barack Obama and several cabinet members will travel to New Orleans next Thursday, more than four years after Hurricane Katrina ravaged the city.
Obama will survey the recovery efforts in the city in his first public event there since becoming president, and will participate in a town hall meeting in the area.

Stacy Phelps, center, attended the Make It Right Foundation Hurricane Katrina commemoration not in any official capacity, but as a friend. Stacy knows how to be a supportive friend, as she has made it her profession. As a worker with theLouisiana Spirit crisis counseling service, she and her colleagues pictured here have been friends to those in need who are still suffering psychologically from the effects of the hurricane.
