Volunteer Nola: Tennessee Williams/New Orleans Literary Festival

The Festival is fast approaching, and we are excited about this year's program.

And while we’ve lined up our theatre stars, contemporary literary legends and various performances, we’re still looking for the real stars of the show: our volunteers.

As a non-profit organization, we depend on our volunteers--a team of over 100 dedicated individuals--to help us ensure that the weekend’s festivities run smoothly. Without their generosity, we would not be able to pull it all off.

Our volunteers make the Festival happen. We would like to ask you to consider signing up for a volunteer slot. Your helping hand will be invaluable to us. Volunteering at the Festival is a great way to meet new people and be inspired by some of the country’s foremost arts luminaries.

As a token of gratitude for your time and effort, we will offer you a free panel pass, which allows access to events featuring acclaimed authors Robert Olen Butler and Armistead Maupin, film and theatre greats such as John Waters, Zoe Caldwell and Grace Zabriskie amongst others.

All we ask is that you commit to working a shift of 4-5 hours during the Festival. We would also ask you to spread the word on our behalf. We really do need all the help we can get!

If there is an event you'd especially like to see, please DO NOT sign up to volunteer during that shift, as we cannot guarantee the venue where you will be assigned.

COUNTDOWN TO THE 2010 FALL GARDEN FESTIVAL

Get ready for the Fall Garden Festival 2010! Last year, over 3500 garden enthusiasts enjoyed vendors from around the region as they presented their works under the three hundred year old oak trees of the Botanical Garden in City Park. With this year’s addition of Live Music, Garden Art and a Kid’s Area, the Fall
Garden Festival will be a picturesque venue for horticulture enthusiasts and local music fans groove in the garden.

Explore all the new activities that the 2010 Fall Garden Festival has to offer.  Discover botanical works of art from local garden artists and landscape designers, including installations by Plant Gallery, Mario Villa and Mia Kaplan. Learn how to create botanical works of art within any home garden during a topiary demonstration by Pearl Fryar and other educational seminars, including a screening of the documentary, "A Man Named Pearl”.  During the New Plant Sale, festival-goers can shop for deals on plants from the city’s finest nurseries.

New Orleans Film Festival kicks off Thursday

The 2010 New Orleans Film Festival runs Oct. 14-21 at various locations around New Orleans.

This year’s highlights include opening night film Welcome to the Rileys a New Orleans-set drama starring James Gandolfini, Melissa Leo and Kristen Stewart.

The festival’s centerpiece film, Black Swan, stars Natalie Portman in a Darren Aronofsky-directed psychological drama about a ballet dancer engaged in a disturbing rivalry with another dancer.

Gentilly Festival!

Gentilly Festival, Inc. will hold it¹s third annual, two-day festival October 9 & 10, at Pontchartrain Park in Gentilly. Saturday¹s festival times will be from 11 a.m.  7 p.m. and on Sunday from 12 p.m.  6 p.m. GentillyFest 2010 is presented by Bud Light. 


Gentilly Fest 2010¹s Main Stage will feature Saturday entertainment to include Booty Trove, Bleu Orleans, Wise Guys, Bucktown Allstars with Kermit Ruffins closing out the day. The very popular Gospel Tent will see performances by the Holy Cross Lutheran Church Gospel Choir, the Church at New Orleans Gospel Choir, the Mahalia Jackson Gospel Choir, St. Raymond/St. Leo the Great Gospel Choir with the World Famous Zion Harmonizers giving the final performance of the day.


Sunday¹s Main Stage performances will include Judy Brisco Spellman, Wanda Rouzan, U4ria, and Rockin¹ Dopsie will close out GentillyFest 2010. Highlighted in the Gospel Tent for Sunday will be the Airflow Gospel Singers, the Bethel Lutheran Church Gospel Choir, the Men of Bethel  Colony South, St. Raymond/St. Leo the Great Gospel Choir and the Watson Memorial Mass Choir will close out the day.

Essence Music Festival will return to New Orleans for four more years

The Essence Music Festival, the linchpin of summer tourism in New Orleans, will return to the city for four more years, Mayor Mitch Landrieu and Essence Communications Inc. President Michelle Ebanks announced Wednesday.


The festival will continue to occupy the Louisiana Superdome and the Ernest N. Morial Convention Center on the Fourth of July weekend through 2014, said Landrieu and Ebanks, who made the announcement at City Hall flanked by state leaders and members of the hospitality community.

New Orleans Festivals Let the Good Times Roll

Let’s face it: Summertime in New Orleans — with its high temperatures and humidity — might not be for every client. Therefore, it makes sense that the city plans many of its festivals in the fall and spring. This upcoming autumn is no exception. 

The New Orleans Convention and Visitors Bureau has a comprehensive website listing all the happenings around town. Visitors should also check out “Gambit,” a free, weekly newspaper and website that is full of event listings for locals and visitors alike.

21st Annual Feed the Multitudes

On Sunday July 4th, the 21st Annual Feed the Multitudes Celebration will take place at Victory Fellowship.  This celebration will not only feed families but provide needed services and resources to many families in the Greater New Orleans area. This year's celebration will give away 500 pairs of shoes, as well as 4,000 bags of groceries.  Victory Fellowship and  Convoy of Hope has created a great program that brings many necessities to families with minimal resources.

Feed the Multitudes Celebration will provide free food, hair cuts and free health screenings.  For the kids, water slides, face paining, space walks and more will be available.  Also, expect to hear live music throughout the day.

In addition to the celebration, on July 8th, Victory Fellowship will provide 1,000 bags of groceries to assist the oil spill victims.

THE 2010 VOODOO EXPERIENCE LINEUP SO FAR

The initial talent for Voodoo 2010 has been announced. Muse (pictured), Ozzy Osbourne, Weezer, MGMT, Drake, Florence the Machine, Hot Chip, Metric, Deadmau5, and Interpol lead the lineup. There’s a diverse group of artists this year, from Icelandic artist Jonsi to the country-fied Jakob Dylan and Three Legs to Kermit Ruffins. Anders Osborne, Trombone Shorty, and Galactic, who all released albums this past year, are on the list.

Broadmoor Fest 2010

May 15 noon - 7p.m.

The Broadmoor Improvement Association's annual neighborhood festival will host excellent food vendors, arts and crafts booths, and community info stations on Saturday, May 15th from noon to 7PM. Local artists such as the critically acclaimed DancingMan504 and award-winning F&S Dancers will also perform as residents and friends mingle along South Galvez Street between Napoleon and Upperline.  This event is free and open to the public with kids activities & fun for all ages!

Featuring musical performances by New Orleans native Andrew Duhon, Wild Bill & the Juanderers, Sunpie and the Louisiana Sunspots, Coot, the Andrew H. Wilson Charter School Music Ensemble, and more!  Ochsner Baptist Medical Center is the official music stage sponsor for Broadmoor Fest 2010.

Foburg Festival 2010: A Definite Success

On behalf of the Humid Beings and Dirty Coast family, we would like to congratulateFoburg Festival on a successful endeavor!

This past weekend marked the first ever Foburg Festival, a compilation of artists, and participating venues on Frenchmen Street in the Marigny, making a much appreciated pit stop in New Orleans on their way to SXSW 2010 in Austin, Texas. Foburg attracted more than 5,000 festival-goers, throughout the weekend.

AIC students head to New Orleans fest

SPRINGFIELD - Students from American International College will be heading to New Orleans, not for any post-Super Bowl celebration party, but to take part in Fete Française, a festival on March 20, featuring French and Cajun food, music and art.

The festival is becoming a staple of the spring festival season, with thousands flocking each year to eat authentic moules et frites and hear French and Cajun music.

R&B singer Mary J. Blige will headline this year's Essence Music Festival in New Orleans.
The festival, slated for July 2 to 4, is billed as one of the largest events in the U.S. that celebrates black music and culture.

Voodoo Experience | 10.30-11.01 | NOLA

"Worship the music." It's Voodoo Experience's tagline and the sentiment seemed to sum up the New Orleans festival. Referred to as Jazz Fest's "much wilder" cousin by local WWOZ DJ and festival performer DJ Soul Sister, this year, the calendar presented a perfect storm for a spectacular freak show weekend with Halloween falling on Saturday night and All Saints Day hitting appropriately on Sunday.

New Orleans hosts vampire-themed film fest

The spooky aura of New Orleans offers a fitting atmosphere for Friday's opening of the occult-themed Vampire Film Festival.

"There's no better city on earth for this festival," said Asif Ahmed, Los Angeles-based independent filmmaker and director of the four-day event just ahead of Halloween, showcasing international films, a vampire-themed ballet and discussions of vampire literature.

The New Orleans Burlesque Festival

Rita Alexander's return to New Orleans went nothing like she imagined in her dreams. A French Quarter burlesque queen in the 1960s, the blonde amazon known auspiciously as "The Champagne Girl" relocated to Las Vegas in the early '70s to join the Folies Bergere showgirls. But for more than two decades, when she closed her eyes at night it was a glamorous and bustling mid-century Bourbon Street scene that danced in her head.
