Oak St. Block Party for the Cure

This is your opportunity to be a hero for kids with cancer!

New Orleans has a St. Baldrick's event, and whether you decide to shave your head, volunteer, or donate,  be a part of the excitement.

The St. Baldrick's Foundation is a volunteer-driven charity that funds more in childhood cancer research grants than any organization except the U.S. government.

Get involved and you'll be giving hope to infants, children, teens and young adults fighting childhood cancers. Thank you!

Cruising for the Coast

Grab your life preserver, hoist the main sails, and prepare yourself for a fun and philanthropic cruise hosted by Ship Island Excursions. Sneak Peak of "Flood Streets"

On February 17th at 7pm, NOVAC, New Orleans Video Access Center, is holding a private sneak peek of "Flood Streets," an independent and locally produced feature film co-written and produced by Helen Krieger and co-written and directed by Joseph Meissner.

The event will be held at Vintage Uptown at 4523 Magazine Street.

"Flood Streets" explores New Orleans' bohemian counterculture in the year following Hurricane Katrina, interweaving characters as eccentric and diverse as the city itself. This event is free of charge, but donations benefiting NOVAC will be accepted at the screening.

Throwdown.1.5 A Benefit for Prospect New Orleans

Founded in 2008 by Dan Cameron, Prospect New Orleans is the largest biennial of international contemporary art in the United States. Conceived in the tradition of the great international biennials, such as the Venice Biennale and the Bienal de São Paulo, Prospect New Orleans showcases new artistic practices from around the world and contributes to the revitalization of New Orleans by spurring tourism and bringing international attention to the city's vibrant visual arts community. 

On Saturday, Prospect New Orleans will celebrate its 15-week series with Prospect.1.5. All money collected from ticket sales and a silent auction featuring artists' work, will go towards Prospect New Orleans mission and initiatives.

Grand Isle Among America's 10 Best Winter Beach Retreats

In the winter, the population of this barrier island off Louisiana's Gulf Coast shrinks back down to its 1,600 permanent residents from its summer high of 14,000. But temperatures remain warm enough to sunbathe, and you can do so without the crowds. Anglers adore this island thanks to the more than 280 species of fish in the surrounding waters, and many flock to Grand Isle State Park to fish in its calm waters. Those not obsessed with reeling in The Big One head to the beaches. Although the 2010 oil spill closed all beaches on the seven-mile-long island this summer, a three-mile stretch of golden sand recently reopened in August, with a full rollout coming soon, after an intensive cleanup effort.

The New Orleans Food Co-op is having a party on Saturday, January 29th from 8:00pm 'til midnight at Carl Mack's Marigny St. venue, across from the Friendly Bar (the corner of Marigny & Chartres). Featuring the music of Chuck Perkins, Linnzi Zaorski, Sean Johnson, Victoria Baker, Michael Wilder, Patrick Godbey and many more! Come support community awareness about the NOFC and co-ops in general.

The event will feature live music, food and refreshments, a raffle, door prizes and more! Free Training for the CCC

Mid City Porch Crawl

On Friday, October 22, from 6:30-10:30pm, the Porch Crawl, MCNO’s annual fundraiser, will return to Mid-City. After beginning the evening with treats and drinks at the Mid-City Yacht Club (440 S. Saint Patrick Street) and the adjacent St. Patrick’s Park, Mid-City residents and visitors will be led on guided tours of five fabulous area porches.

At each porch, participants will sip cocktails and other frosty beverages and enjoy select nibbles from Crescent City Steakhouse, Crescent Pie & Sausage, Katie’s Restaurant, Mandina’s, Ralph’s on the Park, and Ruby Slipper Café. Luscious libations will be provided by Banks Street Bar, Evangeline Lounge, Finn McCool’s, Mid-City Yacht Club, New Orleans Rum, NOLA Brewing Co. and Republic Liquor Distributors.

Ratatat Comes to Tulane

Dust off your ear plugs and prepare your fists - Brooklyn based, electro-rock trio, Ratatat, is coming to town! After having the privilege of playing with such greats as Bjork, The Killers, and Daft Punk, to name a few, this synth-heavy band is currently conquering the U.S. with their first major tour. Nothing Bad About being GOOD

In a timely salute to the great city of New Orleans, GOOD has released their current issue which celebrates and embraces all that is good in The Big Easy. GOOD is a collaboration of individuals, businesses, and nonprofits pushing the world forward. Since 2006, they've made a magazine, videos, and events for people who give a damn. This enlightening issue dives deep into the soul of the tragedy after Hurrican Katrina and examines those who rose above to inspire change and a rebirth of New Orleans. With the 5th anniversary of Katrina and the oily reminder of Deepwater Horizon still fresh on our minds, let us not seek to forget the incredible transformation we have seen in the city as well as its people. TED Goes to NOLA

On August 27, the City of New Orleans will join the ranks of cities with ideas worth spreading as it hosts TEDxNOLA, a full day of the globally renowned TEDTalks as part of this year’s Katrina anniversary week. The event, “TEDxNOLA: Crisis and Creativity,” is a local, self-organized conference convened to explore the pivotal role crises play in developing innovative, groundbreaking ideas, and is bringing together some of the world’s most visionary intellects to examine the opportunities left behind in the wake of disasters including New Orleans Mayor Mitchell J. Landrieu.

Mayor Landrieu will take the stage along with a diverse group of speakers to address the question of how the power of creativity can be used to turn negative events into positive outcomes discussing a broad range of topics.
